Save the Brilliant Original Phantom of the Opera!
Save the Brilliant Original Phantom of the Opera!
Why this petition matters
The Phantom of the Opera is one of the world’s most successful stage productions of all time. It has brought happiness to millions, as well as steady work and income to many actors over the years.
In 2012, a Restaged UK Tour was launched, hailed to be just as good, if not better, by Cameron Mackintosh and Laurence Connor. This tour is in fact, almost completely different from the iconic musical that is Phantom, save for some costumes and the music.
Currently, it looks as if there could be some truth to the rumors that Cameron Mackintosh wants to change and/or replace the original version of the show with some or all of the Restaged version. It is also been speculated and apparently confirmed by cast members that the entire cast, crew, pit, etc. have been let go by Mackintosh. All of these changes and redundancies would not only mean he would have to spend less on the production, but would not have to pay royalties to the late Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, who were instrumental in creating the original version.
Please sign the petition so that the powers that be can see that phans do not want the Restaged version to replace the original. The original staging, sets, etc. is iconic and is the reason a Restaged version could even happen. It is the version that is loved by millions, that people want to see, and the one that has kept the show running all these years. And has made Cameron Mackintosh even wealthier. There is no reason for a change when it plays to almost full houses every night. Updating technology or facilities at the theatre might be necessary and even welcome to make the experience better for patrons and easier for the crew to run the show. But the design and core of the show should be left untouched.
